My name is Helena McConnachie, I live in Bad Fallingbostel, Germany with my husband and 5 children. My husband is a serving soldier out here so we followed the flag and came with him. Our youngest child Grace is two and recently diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. We have a vastly different experience of medical care here as we are provided with medical care by the military initially and referred to specialists within the German health system if that is required. I have been trying to find a site which is geared to help those with diabetes and their families ever since Grace was diagnosed as we all feel a bit at sea with it all as there is so much information to take in about Grace's diet and care and although the care she has received so far from the German hospital has been fantastic there is nothing like talking to other people about their experiences.
Grace is coping amazingly well so far and has adjusted to the routine of constant monitoring of her blood glucose and the wait for lunch as mum checks the carbs in her food. I need some interesting and exciting recipes for her as she is getting a bit fed up with pasta and I am a bit lost with working out portions from the recipe books I already own so any help would be much appreciated! This has been a life changing experience for the whole family and I am just glad that there is support out there for families as well as those suffering from diabetes. Thank you
