Possible Toe loss due to poor circulation in big toe

I'm handling my Type 2 diabetes fairly well (and getting better at it), but I
do have a longstanding problem with my big toe (in one foot only); due to
skin breakdown and resulting pain, I may decide to have the toe amputation.
Do you know anyone who has lost a toe (or two or three), and continues
active in walking, hiking and other sports? I appreciate your input.\

Ruth, Rebecca Queen here. Last year I went through a similiar problem with my right foot. I was very scared at losing my foot. But, I talked to a few of my nurses in the hospital. I only had a couple days to digust the thought. Here it is almost a year later, I have a new right leg. I still don't get out and walk the way I need to but I am getting better. They tell me that after a while I should be able to almost every thing I used to do. I am back to diving into a pool, and walking around my apartment building.
Rebecca.
I find this post tremendously encouraging...I need to take the long view. Still, if I lose a
toe, won't be able to replace it, such as a prosthetic leg can be replaced. (they don't have
the technology yet).. Not a problem with smaller toes, but the big toe--such as in my
case--bears the brunt of weight bearing. I am sure it would probably depend on individual
circumstances (overall health, etc.).
Many thanks for your input.. gives a good overall perspective.

My friends dad lost his grand toe on the left foot and he was still able to walk and drive. They had to fix a pair of shoes for him so that it would not leave sore on his foot.
