Does anyone with Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes do carb counting? If so, do you find it easy or difficult?

Hi Simon,
I have tried carb counting and it is a technique I teach as a Diabetes Educator. I think it can certainly be a challenge when first working with it. I am curious if you are counting by grams of carbohydrates or carb choices. I use carb choices, 15 gm of carbohydrate=1 carb choice. Typically, women are allowed 3-4 carb choices per meal and men are allowed 4-5 choice per meal depending on their weight and whether or not they want to lose or maintain weight.

How do you find carb counting?

Hi Ronda

Since becoming TYPE 1, I have been carb counting. I calculate all my meals and snacks to the gram. I am completely on Nova Rapid insulin and currently am using a pump with blood sensor. I was very thin when I was diagnosed and only with the pump have I been able to gain weight. What an amazing machine. I can't say enough about how I wish every diabetic could have one.

But, I did find carb counting very difficult in the beginning and soon realized what was really in the food I was eating. So, I appreciate that you are teaching others to look at their meals and how it will affect their blood glucose levels.
Simon,

It is wonderful to hear of your success using the pump! How fantastic that the pump has given you such good control with diabetes!

Carb counting remains a challenge for a lot of diabetic patients. I also appreciated your comments on the North American diet and how poorly we tend to eat. Education in that regard is so important as people do not realize that much of what we eat is really poison to our bodies. It sounds like you have conquered that issue as well. Good for you! Hopefully, over time, global knowledge about diet can help slow the progression of the diabetes epidemic!
